The Faculty of Dentistry, originally the Faculty of Dental Science, was established in 1946 and the Faculty of Medicine in 1956. Following a review by the University of its system of governance, the two separate faculties of Medicine and Dentistry were combined into one academic and resourcing body as the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry on 1 January 1994.

In January 2006 the Faculty was renamed the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences to acknowledge the broadened mission of the Faculty in undergraduate and graduate studies in Health Science, Podiatric Medicine, Public Health and Physiotherapy. The Faculty operates as an integrated entity that provides high quality educational and research programmes in Western Australia.

The Faculty has a strong research focus and claims world leaders amongst its graduates and staff, including the 2005 Nobel Laureate, Professor Barry Marshall. Research strengths and priorities include genetic epidemiology, genomic medicine, developmental origins of health and disease, aboriginal health and chronic diseases, such as asthma, cancer and cardiovascular disease.
