All domestic applicants to the graduate pathways to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) and the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) must sit GAMSAT.  Applicants to the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) are required to either sit GAMSAT OR satisfy certain prerequisite subjects.

GAMSAT is not required for the Master of Pharmacy.

The purpose of GAMSAT is to assess your ability to understand and analyse material, to think critically about issues and, in the case of the Written Communication section, to organise and express your thoughts in a logical and effective way. Information on the test can be found on the GAMSAT website

  • All domestic applicants to the graduate pathways of the MD, DMD and DPM* must have a valid GAMSAT score. International applicants have the choice of GAMSAT or MCAT.
  • Registration for the March 2017 Australian GAMSAT opened in early November 2016.
  • The March 2017 GAMSAT was held on Saturday 25 March 2017. There is an additional test held in September 2017, but that test can only be used for 2019 and 2020 entry (not 2018 entry).
  • Further information is available on the GAMSAT Australia website.
  • Applicants to the DPM and DMD will be required to submit their GAMSAT results with their application. MD applicants will be required to enter their GAMSAT ID on their GEMSAS application.
  • GAMSAT scores are valid for two years (so applicants who lodge a 2017 application for 2018 entry require one of the following: September 2015, March 2016, September 2016 or March 2017 GAMSAT score).
  • Applicants can sit the test from their penultimate year of bachelor study.
  • There are three sections of the test: Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences (Section 1), Written Communication (Section 2), and Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences (Section 3)
  • Section 3 of the test is double weighted and assesses biology and chemistry to first year university level and physics to Australian year 12 level.
  • Applicants for the MD require a suitable GAMSAT score in order to be eligible for consideration.
  • Applicants for the DMD require minimum test scores of 50 in each of the three sections, and a minimum overall score of 50. Applicants applying for dentistry who obtain one sectional score marginally below 50 should see our threshold website.
  • Applicants applying for DPM require overall score of at least 50 and no section score less than 50.  Applicants with one sectional score below 50 should contact the Faculty Admissions Office for eligibility advice.
  • It is recommended that applicants prepare for the test - preparation material is available from the GAMSAT website
  • Applicants will be shortlisted for interview based equally on GAMSAT and GPA.
*Applicants to the DPM are required to either sit GAMSAT OR satisfy certain prerequisite subjects.
