There are Graduate Pathways available for domestic graduates for the Doctor of Medicine (MD).  

Applicants apply for the MD through GEMSAS.  2017 applications (for 2018 entry) will open and close in accordance with the GEMSAS timeline

Doctor of Medicine (MD):

  • 4-year postgraduate medical course
  • Commenced in 2014


There were approximately 85 places available in the 2016 admission cycles (for 2017 entry). These quotas included various sub quotas: 

The total intake each year for domestic medicine is 209 places.  For the 2017 admissions cycle (for 2018 entry) there has been an increase in the Direct (School Leaver) Pathway quota to 70% of total places available. Due to transitional arrangements taking place in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 admissions cycles, the number of places available for graduate entry into these cohorts will be fewer than 30%.

Entry Requirements:

  • Completion of a UWA bachelor degree or equivalent
  • A minimum GPA of 5.5 from the most recent three years (FTE) of valid study
  • Sit GAMSAT and obtain a suitable score.
  • Interview (which must be undertaken in Perth and in-person)
  • English Language Competency
  • There is no 10 year rule therefore applicants who completed their bachelor degree more than 10 years ago remain eligible to apply for the MD

Application Process:

  • Applications will be made through GEMSAS.  2017 applications (for 2018 entry) will open and close in accordance with the GEMSAS timeline.

Final Ranking:

  • Final ranking for non-rural applicants to the MD will be based equally on GAMSAT, GPA and Interview
  • Final ranking for rural applicants to the MD will be based equally on GAMSAT, GPA, Interview and a Rurality Ranking


  • Applicants to the MD are not able to defer their place in the course except under exceptional circumstances.

Course Commencement:

  • The course  commences with a compulsory orientation.  The compulsory orientation normally takes place in the last week of January, with classes normally commencing in the first week of February.
