The Faculty acknowledges the importance of having students from diverse backgrounds including those from rural areas.

There is therefore a Rural Pathway available for domestic graduates for the Doctor of Medicine (MD) and the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).

Applicants apply for the MD through GEMSAS.  2017 applications for 2018 entry will open and close in accordance with the GEMSAS timeline.

Applicants apply for the DMD through the UWA Postgraduate Admissions Centre.  2017 applications for 2018 entry opened on 1 March 2017 and will close 31 May 2017

Rural Pathway:

Eligibility for Graduate Applicants:

There is a special sub-quota of graduate places for those applicants who fit the criteria as rural applicants.

An applicant is eligible for consideration as a rural origin applicant if their principal home address has been in an Australian Standard Geographical Remoteness Area (ASGC-RA 2011) 2-5 for any 5 years consecutive or at least 10 years cumulatively.  A search engine for towns in areas can be found here.

Only Rural applicants to the DMD need to submit the Rural Eligibility form (below).  Rural applicants to the MD are asked about their rurality via the GEMSAS application process.

2017 applications for 2018 entry to the DMD will open 1 March 2017 and will close 31 May 2017.  Applications for 2018 entry to the MD will open and close in accordance with the GEMSAS timeline.

      Quota:

MD - 25% of all Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are available to Rural students - including Bonded Medical Places (BMP).
DMD - Approximately 3 places available for 2018 entry

      Ranking components for this Pathway:

Final ranking for rural applicants to the MD and DMD is based equally on GAMSAT, GPA, Interview and a Rurality Ranking.

        Admission process and entry requirements:

        Doctor of Medicine: MD

        Doctor of Dental Medicine: DMD

Additional application requirements for this Pathway:

In addition to the usual application process for the MD and DMD, rural applicants for the DMD course are required to submit a Rural Eligibility form (for graduates) via the online application system by the application deadline.  Rural applicants to the MD are not required to submit this form and instead will be asked about their eligibility via the GEMSAS application process.
