Medicine offers many highly challenging areas of study for committed students with well developed interpersonal skills.

Course outline

As a graduate you will initially work as an intern in the hospital system before specialising in a clinical career or continuing research interests in overall public health. Medical students at UWA come from a variety of backgrounds, which results in an incredibly diverse and rewarding learning experience. Students also have the opportunity to study at one of 12 rural sites, which together comprise the most widespread Rural Clinical School in Australia.

Professional pathway

Undergraduate degree (three years*): Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (see specific entry requirements above)

Postgraduate degree (four years): Doctor of Medicine

*Students who undertake a BPhil(Hons) will take four years to complete their undergraduate degree.

Admission requirements

In addition to the University’s requirement for English language competence, entry to the MD will be based upon the following criteria:

School leaver

Assured entry pathways

A number of places in the MD will be reserved for well-qualified Year 12 applicants,  Rural students and participants in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Outer Metropolitan Program. Selection will be based on UMAT, academic performance (ATAR) and a structured interview

Standard pathway
  • Completion of an undergraduate bachelor’s degree with a Grade Point Average of at least 5.5 (weighted average of approximately 65 per cent)
  • Minimum GAMSAT score of 50 overall and 50 in each section
  • Structured interview

International applicants

Assured pathway (International school leavers)

A number of places in the MD will be reserved for international school leavers. Selection will be based on ISAT, academic performance* (ATAR or equivalent) and a structured interview. All applicants offered a place on this pathway will have a guaranteed place on the MD upon the successful completion of a UWA bachelor degree with a grade point average of 5.5 (approximately 65%).

*Assured Pathway (International School Leavers) will require a minimum ATAR of 96 or equivalent– contact the International Centre for further information.

Standard pathway
  • Completion of an undergraduate bachelor’s degree with a Grade Point Average of at least 5.5 (weighted average of approximately 65 per cent)
  • Minimum GAMSAT score of 50 overall and 50 in each section         OR
  • MCAT with 8 (Verbal Reasoning), 8 (Physical Sciences), M (Writing Sample), 8 (Physical Sciences)
  • Structured interview

English language competence

All UWA doctorate programs have a necessary minimum level of competence in English.
