Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences

This course is for dentists wishing to become specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

This stream is a prerequisite for lateral entry into Level 4 of the Medicine course (i.e. the MB BS degree) at UWA. (Note: A medical degree is a requirement for registration as a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Australia.)

Course outline

The course consists of 41 points in total comprising all of:

• DENT8611 Clinical Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Theory) I
• DENT8612 Clinical Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Practical) I
• DENT8621 Clinical Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Theory) II
• DENT8622 Clinical Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Practical) II
• IMED2201 Normal Systems
• IMED2202 Normal Systems
• IMED3341 Infectious Diseases Part 2
• IMED3343 Foundations and Systemic Pathology Part 2
• IMED3345 Medical Pharmacology Part 2

Upon completion of the requirements for the diploma, students may apply for lateral entry into the Level 4 units of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery course.

Admission requirements

Entry to the Graduate Diploma in Dental Education Studies (Medicine Lateral Entry Stream) requires:

• the Bachelor of Dental Science from this University or equivalent as recognised by the Faculty
• at least two years work experience in the practice of general dentistry
• completion of the primary examination of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, or equivalent.
