UWA's graduate entry medical program (GEMP) for medicine is a four-year course plus a bridging component.

The Bridging Component starts in April and finishes with final assessments in November. The following four years of the course are identical to years three to six of the six-year undergraduate entry course.

This course is available to applicants who have either completed a Bachelor degree or are in their final year of a Bachelor degree.

Applicants must have completed their first degree by the end of the year in which they apply.

Applicants who have completed their Bachelor degree more than ten years prior to the year of application will normally only be considered if there is evidence of continuing tertiary study (at Bachelor, graduate diploma, masters or PhD level) in the intervening period.

Applicants concerned about their eligibility should contact the Faculty.

Selection criteria and process

The selection process for the GEMP has three components, all of which are weighted equally:

  1. The Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admission Test (GAMSAT)
  2. academic performance
  3. a structured interview

The application process begins in the January preceding the year you wish to enter.

Step one Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT)

The GAMSAT is a written test designed to assess your capacity to undertake high-level intellectual studies in a demanding course.

It evaluates the nature and extent of abilities and skills gained through prior experience and learning, including the mastery and use of concepts in basic science.

Applications for the test usually close in late January/early February. The test is held once a year in mid-late March.

GAMSAT scores are valid for two years

If you do not take the GAMSAT in either the year you apply for the GEMP or the year previous to that, you will not be eligible for admission. For example, if you wish to apply for 2010 entry you will need to have sat the GAMSAT in either March 2008 or March 2009.

Step two Academic performance

If you obtain a valid GAMSAT score you will be eligible to apply for the various Graduate Medical Programs across Australia. Initial applications are made through the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). You may list up to three preferences in your ACER application. ACER applications close 5 June 2009.

The application process includes the submission of information on your academic performance. You will be required to demonstrate a grade point average (GPA) of at least 5.5 (approximately equal to a minimum weighted average of 65 per cent) across your last three full-time equivalent years of university study (including bachelor, honours, graduate diploma and masters by coursework level study). No weighting or scaling is applied in the calculation.

While applicants will need to submit their GPA calculation using the ACER guidelines, UWA will recalculate GPAs in the manner outlined on our Grade Point Average - graduate medicine applicants page.

Step three Structured interview

Invitations for interviews are based on GAMSAT and GPA scores.

Please note that although you can apply for up to three graduate medical schools across Australia, you will only have the opportunity to be interviewed by one medical school. Interviews will be held in September 2009 (TBC) with notification sent out mid to late August.

If invited, you will need to lodge an application via the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre by 30 September 2009.
