Applicants must complete a bachelor degree before commencing the Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).

There are no preferred bachelor courses, however, there are recommended subjects in order to best prepare for the Graduate School Admissions Test (GAMSAT).

Applicants should also check prerequisite subjects for their initial bachelor degree.

Prerequisite subjects

All applicants are required to meet the English Competency Level for the University of Western Australia.  Applicants who complete a minimum of two years full-time (or equivalent) degree study in Australia will automatically meet this requirement.

Recommended subjects

It is recommended that applicants have undertaken at least:

  • Physics to year 12 level
  • Chemistry to first year university level (including completion of year 12 level chemistry)
  • Biology or Human Biology at first year university level

These subjects are not prerequisite; however completion of these subjects will help prepare applicants for Medicine or Dentistry studies, as well as for the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT)/The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).  Please refer to the GAMSAT website for further information regarding preparation strategy.

Students on a Direct Pathway to Medicine or Dentistry

Although students on Direct Pathway are not required to sit GAMSAT, these subjects are recommended in order to enter postgraduate Medicine or Dentistry with the same base knowledge as graduate applicants.
