Research areas

We are a research-intensive faculty, providing high-quality educational and research programs for the spectrum of medical, dental and health science disciplines.

Our Schools research encompass:

• Dentistry contributes to our basic understanding of oral diseases and to applied aspects of their prevention and treatment.
• Medicine and Pharmacology has a large and successful research program, carried out in laboratories, hospitals and the community and spanning the breadth of medical research.
• Paediatrics and Child Health covers many clinical and specialist areas including allergy and immunology, asthma genetics, and cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology.
• Population Health takes a strong evidence-based approach to services and health program evaluation.
• Primary, Aboriginal and Rural Health Care research includes clinical studies and trials, and primary care research in urban and rural settings.
• Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences covers diagnosis, assessment, epidemiology, genetics and treatment of mental disorders including schizophrenia, dementia, somatoform, anxiety and substance use.
• Surgery has extensive and diverse research interests including burns, cancer and transplants as well as research methodology and surgical education.
• Women’s and Infants’ Health produces research focused on fetal and newborn medicine.
• Pathology encompasses immunology, molecular biology, haematology, anatomical pathology, clinical biochemistry and microbiology.

Centres

• Centre for Clinical Research in Neuropsychiatry specialises in psychiatric and neuroscience research and education.
• Centre for Genetic Epidemiology and Biostatistics comprises a multi-disciplinary team of genetic statisticians, genetic epidemiologists, mathematicians, epidemiologists, bioinformaticists, molecular biologists, and social scientists.
• Centre for Neonatal Research and Education
• Centre for Musculoskeletal Studies focuses on research by physiotherapists into the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal system which spans a range of fundamental and clinical sciences.
• Oral Health Centre of Western Australia incorporates the University’s School of Dentistry, and provides public dental services to eligible members of the WA public.

Collaborations

Faculty staff collaborate with prominent institutes, teaching hospitals, specialist research organisations and community groups on an enormous range of projects. Researchers across the schools work with national and international teams from Southeast Asia, Europe, USA, Canada, South Africa and India.
