Adequacy of Laboratory Monitoring of Anticoagulation Intensity in Seniors

Summary

To estimate the coverage with laboratory monitoring of oral anti-coagulation (OAC) intensity, of seniors who are taking an OAC, while not hospitalized.

To estimate the incidence rate ratio of unplanned hospital admissions according to the number of days since the last anticoagulation intensity test in seniors who are taking an OAC.

To estimate the aetiological fraction of unplanned hospitalisations, attributable to lack of adherence to laboratory monitoring guidelines, and to evaluate the appropriateness of the guidelines, in seniors who are taking an OAC.

Why my research is important

Provide important information regarding the practice of laboratory monitoring in WA's seniors

Assess how policy changes during 1993 and 2005 have impacted on program

Provide scientific evidence for program guidelines

Provide information on the preventative role of laboratory monitoring, and quantify the risk associated with different laboratory monitoring practices in this population

Provide information on current guidelines in preventing unplanned hospitalisation.
