The Discussion should begin by re-stating your principal findings.

It should then address critically both methodological issues arising from your project and how your findings relate to previous work on the same or related topics.

The Discussion answers three questions:

  1. What did we find?
  2. Do we believe our own results? (were our methods valid - internal validity?)
  3. How do our results fit with what has been found before?

You may also have a section that answers the questions:

  • What else do we need to do?
  • What will this new information tell us?
  • How will this information influence the results we have now?

New material from the results must not be introduced for the first time in the Discussion. The report should end with a conclusion.
